Economic Development in Las Cruces New Mexico

The Las Cruces MSA (Doņa Ana County, NM), located in the southern most part of State of New Mexico, shares its border with El Paso, Texas and the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Its cross-border neighbor, Juarez, is the location of over 290 maquila plants, employing over 206,000 workers. This is the largest concentration of maquila employees in Mexico, 25% more than better known Tijuana.

Las Cruces was ranked the “Best small metro area for business and careers” by the Forbes-Milken Institute in 2002. Forbes.com ranked Las Cruces in the top two “Best small metro area for business and careers” in 2006. The Milken Institute ranked Las Cruces as one of the “Top 3 small areas for business” in 2003 and one of the “Top 2 small areas for business” in 2004. These continued high rankings reinforce the area’s virtually untapped potential.

Much of the area’s success stems from the fact that it boasts lower overall operating costs when compared to larger metro markets. When compared to markets such as Grand Rapids, Chicago and Los Angeles, operating costs are 21% to 37% lower in Doņa Ana County.

The region’s workforce is another attractive asset for business expansion. It is young, dynamic and growing. Continued population growth, both natural and in-migration, will continue to provide a steady stream of workers. Education and training opportunities are available through two state universities and two multi-campus community colleges.

Proactive state and local governments offer a wide range of incentives and tax breaks for new business expansions. Local inducements are available from the City of Las Cruces and Doņa Ana County. The Job Training Incentives Program offered by the State of New Mexico is recognized as one of the best in the nation.

Add all of these advantages to an abundance of competitively priced site options, and it is easy to see that the BorderPlex may be your new business address.
