The BorderPlex, particularly Doņa Ana County, offers lower overall business operating costs compared to many better known manufacturing hubs. These savings, coupled with easy access to the maquilas of Juarez, make the BorderPlex an ideal location for maquila supply facilities.
Using custom software designed by Applied Economics of Phoenix, MVEDA developed a series of sample pro-forma data sheets for various sized light manufacturing facilities. The data below and on the following pages has been developed for a 25,000 square feet facility with 50 employees. Larger facilities with higher labor requirements are compared in the sample pro-forma pages.
For this size operation, overall annual operating costs in Doņa Ana County are 21% to 37% lower when compared to markets such as Grand Rapids, Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angeles. When compared to other southwestern markets, the savings range from 4% to 9%. Employee and benefits costs, lease costs and property taxes offer the greatest savings.
Transportation costs are not included in this analysis. Due to its location adjacent to the border and proximity to the maquilas in Juarez, the BorderPlex offers tremendous savings in time and transportation costs.
While this data may not reflect totally accurate costs or requirements for a specific project, it will offer relative comparisons between the cities listed. Although not all cities or specific human resource and utility requirements can be compared due to software limitations, the comparisons will aid your decision process.
